6 x Victorian Silver Picture Back Coffee Spoons
Here we have an attractive, top quality set of six late Victorian Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons. The spoons are in the Hanoverian pattern with Picture Backs on the bowls featuring a basket of flowers. This was a popular design in the 18th century and was revised by the Victorians as part of the Georgian Revival. The spoons have the letter J elegantly engraved in script style at the top of the stems.
The coffee spoons were made in London by renowned silversmiths Thomas Bradbury & Sons and date to 1896. The firm traced its origin back to Fenton, Creswick & Co in 1773 with the first Thomas Bradbury joining as a partner in 1795. By 1831 the firm was run by Thomas Bradbury Snr & Jnr and remained in the control of the Bradbury family until the early years of the 20th century. The company was bought by Atkin Brothers in 1943 and they maintained the brand name into the early 1950s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each spoon is 11cm / 4.3ins long and the set of six together weighs in at a substantial 86.7g / 3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter a for 1896 and the TB in a shield makers' mark for Thomas Bradbury & Sons.
