2 x Edwardian Silver Candlesticks, Wm. Hutton 1904
Here we have a high quality Pair of Edwardian Sterling Silver Candlesticks. The candlesticks are in the Georgian Revival style, with scalloped octagonal bases, double knopped stems and urn shaped sconces with removable drip trays. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The bases are weighted for stability and covered in green baize to avoid scratching whatever antique furniture they are sat on.
The candlesticks were made in London by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons Ltd and date to 1904. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into trouble in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.
Condition is very good, with just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after around 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each candlestick is 18.8cm / 7.4ins high and the bases are 10.9cm / 4.3ins across. The pair together weigh in at a very substantial 1.07kg / 37.8oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the bases.
The hallmarks on the bases are a little rubbed but those on the removable drip trays are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter II for 1904 and the distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the candlesticks.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
