2 Sets Ormolu Door Plates Door Knobs & Escutcheons
We are offering this very unusual, very finely cast Ormolu set of four Finger/Door plates, two pairs of Mortice Door Knobs and two Escutcheons in Louis XVI style. The finger plates feature a pierced design featuring a bow at the top, swags, a central flaming turch topped urn, with a floral and foliate surround and a beaded edge, as shown.
The door knobs feature an oval fan design and include their spindles and the two escutcheons also feature an oval fan design, topped with a bow.
One of the door plates is impressed with the word ESCARE ORMOLU and the number E1514, so after some research, we discovered a firm by the name of Burt Escare & Denelle Ltd., which, when it was closed down in 1935, had been in business for 170 years, with its head office at 195 Wardour Street, London W1. The Lease to its premises, machinery, stock in hand etc. was being auctioned off by Knight Frank & Rutley in June of that year The auction details gave information on the company as follows.
The company supplied chandeliers to Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace, St. James's Palace, Marlborough, Portman, Devonshire, Chesterfield and Spencer Houses. (Incidentally there are several of their chandeliers at Ironmongers Hall in the City of London) The Company, as well as chandeliers, made art metal work, electroliers, candelabras, sconces, lanterns, girandoles, appliques, chenets, door furniture etc., in bronze, chased ormolu, carved wood, in the styles of the best French and English periods and others modelled from palaces and well known mansions, including Knole chandeliers, appliques after Gouthiere at the Petit Trianon.
The dorr plates all bear the stamped mark S in a square and the number 888. The escutcheons have the same S mark and the number 704. We could find no marks on the door knobs, but the fan design is the same as on the escutcheons.
