This is a superb quality pair of “full age” antique ash and elm country farmhouse spindle-back rush seated kitchen chairs, circa 1850. The chairs boast a prominent shaped top rail with a central fan motif, flanked by two upright supports featuring simple finials. Below, there is a bank of refined turned spindles, secured by two horizontal square rails. The seats have recently been re-rushed by hand therefore the rush seats are in excellent condition. The base of the chairs feature lovely turned legs and a bulbous shaped stretcher to the front. The front stretcher is heavy and turned – a good sign of quality. The chairs feature twin connecting side stretchers which ensures the chairs stand firm on the ground. All chairs are made from top quality ash and elm and are firm and solid.

This is a true set of chairs and not a matched set where similar chairs have been pieced together to form a set. The term “full age” refers to the meaning that these chairs are full in age and are not later copies of the original spindle back chairs. These chairs have originated from the Lancashire and Cheshire region of North west of England but were also known as a “Lancashire” chair. They were made for use in kitchens in simple country homes around this area during the time of the great mills in the Industrial Revolution.

The chairs feature a superb rich deep brown and red oak colour. As they boast the original polish, they have a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning they have received.

The chairs would look superb in any kitchen or dining room. They would certainly grace any home and are a great investment as they are extremely functional. So don't miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of antique furniture.
