19th Century Neoclassical Plaster High Relief
Italian plaster high relief from the 19th century. Work in neoclassical style depicting the Muses dancing on Mount Elicona. Like the three graces at the center of the composition, the nine muses are daughters of Jupiter and live on Mount Helicon in Greece. There is a festival in which the God of the sun passes in front of the mountain and it is precisely a similar occasion that is depicted in the relief. They represented the supreme ideal of art and were protected by Apollo who we find on the left intent on playing the lyre. Sculpture inspired by the famous relief by the Danish artist Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) now exhibited in the National Museum of Berlin. The Danish sculptor was one of the greatest exponents of neoclassicism and Antonio Canova's greatest rival. He worked mainly in Rome and embodied the style of classical Greek art, in fact his figures are more rigid and formal than those of Canova. High relief of nice size and great decor, ideal for placing in a living room, living room or study. A work that is difficult to find and has a beautiful patina, with some small chips and signs of aging (see photo). Structurally sound relief, overall in good state of conservation.
