19th century Lignum Vitae Mortar Mortar Lignum Vitae Apothecary %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
An early 19th century Apothecary Mortar, turned from Lignum Vitae. This heavy and dense wood, imported from the West Indies, was highly prized for it's strength and water resistance. Mortars and their accompanying pestles were essential items of treenware in both medicine and the home/kitchen for centuries.
This example of antique treenware is finely turned, with inscribed lines adding additional decoration. The natural waxed surface and colour makes it particularly attractive. Circa 1820.
