19th C Dutch Silver Decorative Spoon, Reitsma 1897 Victorian Dutch Silver %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is an attractive late 19th century Dutch 934 Grade Silver Decorative Spoon. The bowl of the spoon has an image of a female figure in a garden within a beaded frame and a crimped rim. The stem arches upwards from the bowl with a rope and flower decoration part way up and a curving finial surmounted by a figurine of a bird.

The spoon is made in the town of Sneek in The Netherlands by S & H Reitsma and imported into England by Samuel B. Landeck in 1897, who had it assayed in Sheffield for his specialist silverware store in London. In the 1890s, Steven & Hendrik Reitsma succeeded to the business founded by their grandfather Steven Tjittes Reitsma in Lemmer around 1814 and later moved to Sneek. The Reitsma family produced consistently good quality silverware for both the Dutch and international markets.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and it appears to have been kept as a decorative piece rather than used as a spoon. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 14.8cm / 5.8ins long and weighs in at a very respectable 28.0g / 0.99oz of high grade 934 / 1000 silver.

The spoon has both Dutch and English silver marks on it. On the back of the stem is the lion rampant above a number 1 showing that it is 934 / 1000 grade silver. This is defaced by a key symbol, which shows that the spoon was made for the export market. Below this is the hammer & R makers' mark for S & H Reitsma. The motif on the front of the stem is stamped with the Minerva assay mark. The English import hallmarks are stamped in the bowl of the spoon. They show the lion passant that says it is Sterling Silver grade (925 / 1000) or higher, the letter F for foreign to show that it is an import, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter e for 1897 and the S.B.L sponsors' mark for importer Samuel B. Landeck.
