1930s Fruit Bowl By Adderley's Ltd
This is a very attractive hand painted fruit bowl made by Adderley's Ltd and dating to around the 1930s. As well as being a fruit bowl, the bowl is in the pattern called "Fruit" just to make sure that nobody missed the point!
The outside of the bowl is painted with a range of colourful fruits and foliage on a dark blue background. The inside has a blue "drizzle" effect on a cream coloured background. It is an unusual and striking effect.
Adderley's Ltd was originally founded as Hulse, Nixon & Adderley in 1853, eventually becoming Adderley's Ltd in 1906 and carrying on until it was bought by Ridgway Potteries in 1947. The mark on this bowl dates it to the period 1926 to 1947 but it is almost certainly pre-WW2.
The bowl is in good condition with no chips or cracks. It is 22.5cm / 8.8" in diameter and stands 10cm / 4" high.
The mark on the underside of the bowl is the classic Adderley's Ltd ship mark inside a chain ring. It has Made In England inside the chain, which dates it to the 1926-1947 period. The design name "Fruit" is above the ship mark.
