1857 French Slate / Marble Mantel Clock
Well-proportioned French polished slate / rouge marble striking mantel clock, with imposing yet simple, elegant architecture.
As was the trend in French mantel clock production during the mid-19th Century, this wonderful clocks’ case was designed and sculptured by an expert stone craftsman and assemble by one of the French horological firms, using their own exceptionally engineered circular movements. With this fine example, the sculptor went by the initials ‘E.C.’, whilst final clock assembly and the movement were provided by world-famous clockmakers Japy Frères and Co.
This fine breakfront stepped clock, is made of black slate with variegated rouge marble embellishment to the sides and plinth. The clocks white enamel two-piece dial holds its visible jewelled Brocot escapement surrounded by black Roman numerals and finished with its original pair of blued Straight Breguet hands secured with a pinned collet. The dial is then protected by a thick bevelled glaze mounted in its moulded brass bezel.
As highlighted, the clock has a high-quality Japy Frères circular 8-day pendulum driven movement, accessed via its rear hinged bevelled glazed door (also mounted in a brass bezel). The backplate is stamped with the sculpturers initials and two serial numbers, together with the Japy Frères et Cie 'Grande Medaille d’Honneur' 1855 trademark, helping to date the clock. The movement strikes the hours and half-hours on its nickel ‘ting bell’ and comes with an authentic French pendulum and winding key.
