12” English Fusee Dial Timepiece by Wayland Bros 1850
We present for consideration, this superb fusee wall clock with 12” dial, by makers and brothers Henry John Wayland and James Wayland of London.
Henry (born 1822 in Stratford, London) and younger brother James (born 1825, again in Stratford, London), were professional clock and watchmakers based at Broadway, Stratford, London, Essex from c1850 (where this clock would have been made), moving to 380 Hight Street, Stratford, London from c1856, which was also a jewellery shop.
NB: James also resided at the High Street, Stratford address and by 1882 was working with two of his sons, (Harry and Sydney Wayland), bother Henry having retired from the business to High Road, Leyton, Essex, around the same time. By 1900, James had likewise retired and resided at Dover Road, Wanstead, Essex.
The clocks solid Mahogany turned roundhead face and boxed cabinet have nice, aged patination, with a hinged inspection door located on the side of the box and an operable lockable regulator door to the bottom of the box. The clock retains its original metal dial and paintwork, with black Roman numerals and the Wayland brothers’ details, finished with a pair of blued Spade hands, secured with a pinned collet. The clocks dial is then protected by a thick bevelled glaze mounted in a brass bezel.
The clock benefits from a fabulous high quality 8-day single fusee driven movement set between rectangular plates and turned pillars and comes with its original 76mm diameter brass pendulum bob and a brass winding key.
A well-proportioned London made dial timepiece of excellent order and quality!
