Description

Silver plated letter rack manufactured by Hukin & Heath of Birmingham to a design by Christopher Dresser in 1881. Distinctive Dresser design in convex, fanned-out form with articulated rod and ball shaped arms and flattened spherical feet. Hukin & Heath employed Christopher Dresser as Art Advisor between 1878 and 1881 and this design was assigned the model number 2555.The letter rack is fully marked with the Hukin & Heath initials, a stylised bird and the model number. The base has also been stamped with a diamond-shaped British Registry Mark which enables the piece to be accurately dated to 9th May 1881. The letter rack, which is often mistaken for a toast rack, is extremely rare and highly collectable. This example is in excellent condition and, although there is some wear to the electroplating the rivets securing the dividing arms to the base are secure and there are no signs of damage or repair. Item No. 0037.
