William A Thornbery
This oil on canvas is by the artist William Thornbery depicting the Wreck of a Brig, off the East Cliff at Hastings. It is a Morning after a Gale, and the typical Hastings fishermen's buildings are in the background
It is now generally thought that William Thornley is the same artist as William A Thornbery, painting under another name, a practice sometimes indulged by Victorian artists. He was a fine painter of shipping and coastal scenes and often painted his pictures in pairs. He was painting in the latter part of the 19th century.
