Well-Proportioned Silver Dial Fusee Pocket Watch
A fine and well-proportioned early Edwardian open-faced silver fusee pocket watch, by watchmaker and jeweller Simon Halpern, of 79 Stanley Street, Cheetham Hill, Manchester, (then Lancashire).
Born c1867 in Russia and raised under the Judaism faith, Halpern arrived in England as a young toddler with his father and mother (Jonahs and Anna), before the family settled in North Manchester, c1869. Eventually and with the help and support of the large Jewish community that resided in Manchester at the time, Halpern (in partnership with his younger brother Samuel, who was a qualified silversmith and goldsmith), was able to set-up his own prestige watchmaking and antique jewellery business from c1889, becoming both widely well-known and respected in the region, as the two brothers undertook and developed their operations in the high-end of the market. (Under the name “Halpern Brothers”, Simon, often produced pocket watches with Samuel, who was born in Manchester c1873).
Simon passed away on 17 August 1916, at 29 Heywood Street, Cheetham Hill, Manchester (Samuel in the following year, also in Manchester), yet their prospering business, (by then a sole and large jewellery retailer), remained in good hands into at least the late 1970’s, being run and managed by joint family generations of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Hallmarked Chester 1902, this wonderful, high-quality heavy watch, has a silver dial with subsidiary second’s dial, both with blued hands. Raised Gothic style gold numerals, a gold floral garlanded ring, and hand-crafted central silver floral decoration.
The fusee movement with Liverpool Arrow (the mark of engineering excellence), has a gold balance and ruby end stone. The case maker was Samuel Yeomans (“S.Y”), Spon Street, Coventry and the case and movement serial numbers are the same, “189403.”
(NB: Engraved onto the curvette is: “Joseph Palmer, High St., Swallow Nest” - Possibly High Street, Swallownest in Sheffield, and a former owner of the watch?)
The watch comes securely packed with a winding key, together with instructions on how to wind and set the watch time.
Note: This watch does not come with a chain or fob. If you require a silver chain/fob from our large stock, please contact us for advice.
