Victorian Dappled Rocking Horse
Beautiful Victorian dappled rocking horse in excellent original condition, this will be a joy for any child to use. It has glass eyes, a horsehair tail and mane, a gorgeous leather saddle which is unusually integrated into the back of the horse, leather tack with metal stirrups, and a pretty scarlet rosette attached to the bridle. The finely carved head, legs and hooves are a testament to the quality of this piece. It stands sturdily on a pine frame with turned pillars, which has a faded mark to the base indicating that it was originally retailed by A. W. Gamage Ltd of London, a department store trading from 1878 and particularly well known for toys.
Dating to circa 1880, this is made from wood, leather and metal and originates from the UK.
In great original condition, the frame stands firmly to the floor and the horse has a good motion. Other than the expected minor age-related wear and tear, there is a small metal rivet missing at the tail end of the leather strip on the rump, but this is otherwise in excellent condition for its age.
