Victorian Camphor wood Campaign Trunk.
This is a 19th Century Campaign, or Military Trunk.
It would have been used for transporting army officers campaign kit and equipment.
In common with most military antique furniture of this genre it has inset brass bound corners and edges to protect it from knocks and damage on rough journeys over hazardous terrain.
It is made of camphorwood, a dense heavy hard wearing wood from India & Malaya. Camphor itself has insect repelling properties, making it a wood of choice for chests used for storing fabric and clothes.
This trunk is a very attractive example, and in very good overall condition. The surface has many dints and scratches from hard practical wear. but it remains good, solid and sound. The planks of camphor are all hand dovetailed together, and it retains its original brass mounts and iron carrying handles. The hinges are original and in good order and the inside of the trunk has a length of hessian webbing attached to allow the lid to stand open without straining the hinges. There is a small lidded box fitted inside the trunk, which would have been for dress accessories.
The turned feet are probably not original but are of the period and work very well for the chest design.
Military chests often did have feet though, despite their impractical nature for travelling and stowage. They were invariably removable on screw threads, so they could be taken off for journeys, to prevent damage, and reassembled into free standing antique furniture, when at camp.
The chest is wax polished including the back, so it can be used free standing, as a coffee or lamp table by a sofa for example.
There are marks and old patches to the front edge of the top where old metal hasps have been removed, and it has lost its lock keeper to the underside of the lid.
