An excellent quality Italian Pietra Dura inlaid marble topped table incorporating a chess top decorated with many exotic and colourful specimens of marble. The marble inlay is laid onto a slate base and would have been brought home from Italy in the 19th cent. by a traveller doing the ‘Grand Continental Tour’. This top has been applied to a decorative cast iron English base making a very striking pedestal occasional table. The top has had bearers applied underneath so that it fits firmly on the base but can be lifted off as required. Sizes given are the dimensions of the top. 16 ½ “(42cms) diameter, 31”(79cms) high. Date circa 1850. I have been in the antiques business since 1962, starting in the family business in Staffordshire.
In the early 1970’s I moved to Hertfordshire where I opened my own business and created a limited company.
