Oil painting on canvas depicting Madonna and child
Description: Antique oil painting on canvas depicting Madonna and Child with gilded and carved wooden frame.
Mary is represented according to classical iconography, while she holds Jesus in her arms.
Jesus and Our Lady, both in the foreground, hold a lily in their hands:
In his Vallis Liliorum, the German mystic Thomas of Kempis quotes the Song of Songs: "I am the flower and the lily of the valleys" “This is the word with which Christ addresses his holy Church in general, and more especially to each compassionate soul. Indeed, Christ is the beautiful spouse of the Catholic Church […], the flower of all virtues, the lily of the valleys. [...] Whoever therefore wants to serve Christ and please the heavenly husband, try to strip himself of his vices, to gather the lilies of virtue ".
Jacopone da Todi, in The Crying of the Madonna of the Passion of the Son Jesus Christ, makes Mary say: “O son, son, son! / Son, loving lily, / son, who gives advice / to my distressed heart? ".
"If the combination of roses and lilies in religious representations often emphasizes the mystical bond between Mother and Son", writes Piccolo Paci, "where the presence of the iris is emphasized, perhaps associated with another flower, such as columbine for example, we want to highlight the sovereignty and the painful and necessary destiny of the Savior ”.
The open window behind the figures gives depth to the entire composition.
The splendid workmanship and the refined colors, evidently of the highest level, suggest in fact the attribution to a highly talented author working in Lombardy in the second half of the 18th century.
Conditions: Excellent condition.
Measures: 75x85cm.
Provenance: Lombardy, 18th century.
Document: Certificate of Authenticity.
Assistance: We are at your disposal for further clarifications or photographic details

We wish you a good day.
