George VI Silver Gilt Coronation Spoon London 1936
Here we have a very fine quality cased Sterling Silver Gilt Spoon, a replica of the Coronation Annointing Spoon produced to commemorate the Coronation of King George VI in 1937. The original spoon is part of the Crown Jewels held in the Tower of London and dates back to the 12th century. It has been used in crowning the monarch ever since and will next be seen at the Coronation of King Charles III. This is very much at the top end of coronation memorabilia.
The spoon was made in London by Saunders, Shepherd & Co Ltd and dates to 1936. The London date letters ran from May 29th each year, so the 1936 date letter runs from May 29th 1936 to May 28th 1937. King George VI's coronation took place on May 12th 1937.
Cornelius Saunders & Frank Shepherd founded their firm of silversmiths in the City of London in 1878. Around 1931 it became Saunders, Shepherd & Co Ltd. They ceased trading in the 1940s.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents, no significant loss to the gilding and with the four seed pearls securely attached. The box has one broken hinge and a few scuff marks but still snaps closed securely and has done a good job protecting the spoon so far. It comes complete with a small piece of parchment bearing information on the history of the spoon. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 15.6cm / 6.1ins long and weighs a very respectable 30.7g / 1.08oz of solid Sterling Silver Gilt.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the bowl, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter A for 1936 and the S & S Ld makers' mark for Saunders, Shepherd & Co Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
