George VI Silver Compact, Ramsden & Roed, 1944
This is a fine quality George VI Sterling Silver Powder Compact with Mirror from the Second World War period. The compact is square with engine turned decoration to front and back and plain sides. It comes with its original mesh screen and lambsdown powder puff.
Silver was in very short supply during the Second World War and pieces from the early 1940s are comparatively rare. This would have been an expensive and very special purchase at this time.
The compact is made in London by Ramsden & Roed and dates to 1944. Ramsden & Roed were manufacturing goldsmiths and silversmiths based in Warwick Street, W1, which runs parallel to Regent Street, from the 1920s to the 1970s. They produced very good quality cigarette cases & boxes, compacts, dressing table sets, cigar cutters and the like for high end retailers such as Asprey, Garrard & Dunhill.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 75 years of good service. Inevitably the mesh screen and powder puff are showing their age a little. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The compact is 6.2cm / 2.4ins square and without the accessories weighs in at 93g / 3.3oz, but this does of course include the inset mirror.
The hallmarks on the inside powder tray are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter I for 1944 and the R & R makers' mark for Ramsden & Roed.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the compact.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
