George V Silver Sugar Tongs, Sanders & Hill, 1912
This is an interesting pair of George V Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs. The tongs have small bowls and barley twist stems with a figure of a knight in armour with a shield and an axe on either side of the curve. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The sugar tongs were made in Birmingham by silversmiths Sanders & Hill and date to 1912. Sanders & Hill registered their mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1907 and operated from premises in Warstone Lane in the famous Jewellery Quarter. They produced tableware, flatware and smoking accessories but seem to have disappeared around the start of the First World War in 1914.
Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tongs are 10.7cm / 4.2ins long and weigh in at a respectable 25.5g / 0.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the curved hinge, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter n for 1912 and the S & H makers' mark for Sanders & Hill.
Shipping in the UK is £5 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
