George V Silver Shell Sugar Tongs Cooper Bros 1928
This is a good quality pair of George V Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs in the Shell pattern. The tongs are made in Sheffield by Cooper Brothers & Sons and date to 1928. The Cooper Brothers founded their company in Sheffield in 1866 with their Sons joining them in 1895. They are particularly known for their high quality flatware and cutlery and remained in business up until the 1980s.
These tongs are in the Shell pattern, a variant on the Old English pattern that first appeared in the 1770s and has remained in production ever since. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The tongs are perfectly suitable for use today or would make a nice addition to a collection.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and only the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 90 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tongs are 9.5cm / 3.75" long and weigh a respectable 17.7g / 0.62oz.
The hallmarks on the inside of one arm are well struck and very clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter "l" for 1928 and the CB & S makers' mark for Cooper Brothers & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
