George III mahogany timepiece by George Lupton – Altrincham c1780
A very rare small grandfather antique clock by George Lupton – Altrincham c1800. The 9” dial enclosed in a sleek mahogany case with ebony string inlay and splayed bracket feet. The hood flanked by ebony reeded Corinthian columns capped with gilt bronze acanthus leaves, the swan neck pediment also have gilt bronze floral rosettes decorating them. The dial has etched numerals and foliate decorations with a painted moon phase dial the brass plate has gilt bronze foliate applications. The whole is 76” high by 16” wide by 8” deep.

George Lupton l (1772 - 1828) - The earliest record was when he advertised for a journeyman clockmaker in 1772 and was still recorded as having been working in 1828. By 1793 he was a freeholder and bought clock parts and tools from Peter Stubbs of Warrington from 1799 -1814. He was also an engraver. He was the forbearer of the Lupton family of clockmakers as detailed below:

John Lupton I, Altrincham (born 1698 - died 1759) Married Martha Fletcher at Manchester's Collegiate Church 17 October 1723 On 25 March 1724 took John Thomas Hardy as apprentice for 6 years at £28 and Thomas Harrop on 27 October 1753 for 7 years at £17 10s. In 1741 a watch by him was reported as lost. His gravestone at Bowdon records his death on 15 May 1759.
John Lupton lI, Altrincham ( 1763 - died 1765) Took Michael Upton as apprentice 1 June 1763 for 7 years at £15 Married to Hannah Clockmaker, will proved 1765.
John Lupton llI, Altrincham (1829 - 34) Children born 1829 - 31. In 1834 at the Market Place.
Hannah Lupton, Altrincham (1801 - 41) Market Place 1841 and probably the wife of John III
