Edward Williams 1782-1855 Oil Rural L/S 1846 Edward Williams Williams Family Oil Painting %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer this superbly painted landscape by the celebrated artist and founder of the Williams Family of painters EDWARD WILLIAMS Senior, often known as Old Williams. The painting depicts a cattle drover resting against a tree trunk outside a group of cottages. His cattle are in the shade of the tree beneath which he is resting. There is a flock of sheep in the field and some outbuildings to the left of the cottages. The sun is setting. The paintings is signed in the lower right hand corner as shown E. Wms. and dated 1846.

EDWARD WILLIAMS was born in London in 1782, the son of the engraver also called Edward Williams and Mary Ward. After his mother had left the family, he was brought up and tutored by his uncle James Ward RA, (1769-1859), who was a great friend of the artist George Morland. He painted almost exclusively in oil and favoured pastoral scenes and scenes around the Thames, although there are some seascapes and moonlight scenes.

He was the father of Edward Charles Williams (1807-1881), Henry John (Boddington) (1811-1865), George Augustus Williams (1814-1901), Arthur Gilbert Frederick Williams (Arthur Gilbert) (1819-1895), Sidney Richard Percy W. (1821-1886), and Alfred Walter Williams. As shown, some of his sons dropped their surnames to avoid confusion with their father, as their work mainly showed a great similarity with his.

He exhibited widely, at least 150 works, at the Royal Academy, British Institution, Suffolk Street and elsewhere between 1814 and 1855. He lived at 32 Castelnau Villas, Barnes, where he died. (This house is still standing but is now numbered 92 Castelnau).
