Just how we like to find early oak!!!!!
Dry & untouched with the medullary rays giving off of a silvery
sheen... no wax necessary for this!!!!!!! perish the thought!
This is an Interesting Bench End .. more from a stylistically point of view than anything else.... just after the Dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s, the parish church of St Laurence
Affpuddle Dorset, which has a great meaning in itself...( a puddle which is hidden by a paving stone , and you only know its there when you step on the loose stone and the water underneath shoots up your leg!!! )AffPUDDLE! The Priest of that time was a man by the name of Thomas Lylington... who by repute had these then new style Pew Ends Installed into the church..granted there is a perpendicular style to this bench end...(Late Gothic) but.... equally a more Renaissance style of ornamentation with its pendulum scroll work swag and stylized linenfold front...part of the new order in style and trend which had come from mainland Europe and was taking hold of Tudor England, this kind of work having a less Ecclesiastical feel about it .. which
was more in tone with the Kings outlook... than the earlier deeply religious connotations of church work, which had nearly all been destroyed.Overall a completely original piece of early Tudor church work with Integrity!
