Early Mahogany Barometer By Francis Molton
The early shape mahogany case is outlined with chequered stringing and has cross grained veneered sides, another sign of an early wheel barometer is when the engraved dial is graduated to 1/10th of an inch rather than 1/100th as on later dials.
Francis Molton is noted as being one of the few English makers of barometers in the predominantly Italian family lead industry. He uniquely developed the most unusual feature of this barometer, the method in which the setting hand is operated. The setting knob, which is at the bottom of the case, is connected to a geared rod which turns the cogged setting hand on the dial. Although this was Molton's own design he only used it on some of his barometers, many still used the standard method of positioning the setting hand.
According to Edwin Banfield(Barometer Makers And Retailers 1660-1900), Molton was known to have worked from London, 1790-1810 and was registered at Dove Lane and St. Lawrence's Steps in Norwich 1822-30.
