C17th Carved Oak Marriage Box Settle
This attractive antique box settle is made from solid oak and is heavily carved. It appears to be a marriage piece, made to celebrate the marriage of Henry and Dorothy Graye in 1659. We believe it to be original to the period, with some later restoration and alteration. The motto 'De Bon Vovoir Servir Le Roy' (trans. 'To Serve the King with Good Will') is also carved into the back. The settle has a heavily carved panelled back with a carved top rail. It has shaped arms amd a carved panelled base. The seat lifts up to reveal a storage interior. The seat has lovely old blacksmith-made hinges. We do not have any provenance for the piece - there is the remains of an old label on the inside of the lift-up seat, but this is not legible.
Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected and the piece is overall a little faded. There are some areas of wood loss and some shrinkage cracking. There are some areas of restoration and alteration - we believe the seat to have been replaced at some point. There are some signs of old woodworm - this is not active, but has been retreated as a precaution.
The approx. measurements are as follows:
Overall - 168cm high, 180.5cm wide, 62cm deep (to maximums) 47.5cm high to seat. Further images are available. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Viewing is welcome, but please contact us before travelling as we are only open by appointment.
We can arrange delivery of both smaller items and furniture - please contact us for details and a quote. Customers are also welcome to use their own couriers if preferred.
Payment can be made by PayPal, bank transfer, cheque [UK only], and cash on collection.
