Bath Cabinet Makers Arts & Crafts Oak Sideboard
An unusual Arts & Crafts quarter-sawn oak & marquetry bowfront sideboard cabinet by Bath Cabinet Makers. Dating to circa 1895 this beautiful side cabinet is of neat proportions and features a flared rectangular cornice above an inlaid panelled back flanked by leaded glass cabinets, the bowfront base with an ebonised strung central drawer and two cupboards to either side with geometric inlays in contrasting veneers highlighted by boxwood stringing. Raised on square tapering legs with a shaped undertier shelf and with impressed numbers to the rear.
In good condition with minor signs of age & use, with original brass ‘VR’ lever locks and a key, some bowing to the windows and fading including to the cupboards and legs but can be polished if preferred,
Bath Cabinet Makers were established in Bath in 1892 by brothers Charles & Henry Richter, they quickly acquired large scale commissions for complete interior decoration for hotels and stores hungry to acquire a new look to match the spirit of the turning century. The firm won five medals (including silvers to each of the Richter brothers and bronze to George Montague Elwood) in the 1900 Paris World Exhibition further consolidating their good reputation. By the early 20th century their furniture was on constant display in London stores like Maples and Harrods and they were supplying bedroom suites to Heal’s. Further commissions including making furniture for luxury liners and hotels including the state rooms of RMS Queen Mary, and Claridges Hotel. They had a showroom in London and also exhibited at the 1925 Paris International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. In addition to their high quality Arts & Crafts furniture they are known for their Art Deco designs.
