Arthur Meade RBA ROI St. Ives School Oil Portrait Arthur Meade RBA ROI %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are offering for sale this lovely bust length oil portrait of a lady by the St. Ives artist Arthur Meade, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a young woman with her hair parted in the middle and wearing a lace cap. She is wearing a black dress with a high collar and a lower white collar. The dress is buttoned down the front and she has a large cameo brooch at the neck. She is also wearing a long gold chain, perhaps holding a chatelaine. She has a faint smile on her lips.

Arthur Meade was born in Boroughbridge in Somerset in 1864. He studied under Gerome in Paris and at Hubert Herkomer's School in Bushey, Hertfordshire. He arrived in St. Ives in 1890 with his wife Mabel (nee Panton), who he married in 1889. Initially the couple boarded at 2 Bowling Green Terrace, prior to moving to 'Godrevy', Trelyon Hill in 1904, where he lived for many years. He later resided in Blackwater, Hampshire in 1933 and Lelant in Cornwall in 1934.

He was elected a full Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1895 and a full Member of the Royal Oil Painters Institute in 1909.

He died on 30th December, 1942 and is buried in St. Senara's Churchyard at Zennor in Cornwall.

He initially painted traditional landscapes, but then turned to coastal and harbour scenes. He also painted portraits and figures and became known for painting bluebells, earning himself the nickname 'Bluebell' Meade.

He exhibited 4 times at the Paris Salon in 1905, 1911, 12 and 13, where he received an Honourable Mention for one of his paintings. At St. Ives Show Day in 1911, he exhibited 2 landscapes and 2 portraits. He also exhibited in the UK, 63 works at the Royal Academy, 92 at the Royal Oil Painters Institute, 12 at the RBA, 18 at Manchester City Art Gallery, 13 at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham, 7 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and 1 at the New Gallery.

The year after his death, Lanham's Gallery in St. Ives held an Arthur Meade exhibition.

His biographical details may be found in the Dictionary of British Artists (Ciollectors' Club), The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters, The Shining Sands Artists in Newlyn and St. Ives 1880-1939 by Tom Cross, and the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood.

Auction results may be found at the usual sites, but the record price paid for one of his oils was in 2004, where two paintings each achieved £5,000.

The painting has been newly framed in a very nice 3" gilt frame to suit and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
