Artist Biography
Joy Barnes was born in 1912, daughter of the eminent psychologist Professor Spearman. She studied at the Chelsea School of Art under Henry Moore and Graham Sutherland. She continued her studies in Munich focusing on commercial art. In 1936 she started working for Service Advertising Agency producing advertising art work for many high end retailers and manufacturers. After the war she moved to Somerset and founded the Bruton Art Society. Joy is still alive and painting today aged 100.

This is an original artwork design for the front cover of Femina Magazine. It is a highly stylized image of a woman using sprayed ink and body colour. It is not thought that this design was actually used for the cover, it is most likely a study piece that Joy created towards the end of her studies in Germany.
