After Thumann Clotho Spinning The Thread Of Life
We are delighted to offer for sale this large Oil Painting on Canvas by an unknown artist of the late 19th/early 20th Century. The painting depicts the figure of Clotho, one of the three Moirai or Fates, from Greek mythology, spinning the thread of life from her distaff onto a spindle. Her sister Lacheris then would measure the amount of thread that a person was allotted and Atropos (whose name means inexorable one) would cut the thread and end the person's life.
This painting is after the central figure in the painting of the Three Fates by Friedrich Paul Thumann (1834-1908), who was a German painter and illustrator, the son of a teacher, who was born on 5.10.1834 and died on 19.2.1908. He studied at the Prussion Academy of Arts in Berlin 1854-56, then worked in the studios of Julius Hubner in Dresden. After 2 years in Leipzig, he entered the Weimar Saxon-Grand Ducal Art School, where he studied under Ferdinand Pauwels. He became a Professor there in 1866.
After the Franco-Prussian war, when he worked as a draughtsman, he was appointed a Professor at the Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1875. He produced plates for many books, including works by Goethe and Tennyson. He also travelled widely throughout his life and, in 1893 was exhibiting his work Psyche at Nature's Mirror in Chicago at the World's Colombian Exposition, when it was seen by the White Rock Mineral Company, who bought the rights and it has been on their labels ever since. There are many examples of his paintings, including Psyche and The Fates online. The date that he painted The Fates is unknown.
The painting has been newly framed in a 4 1/4" gilt frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 34 1/2" x 22 3/8" - 87.65cm x 56.85cm
