2 x Edwardian Silver Napkin Rings, W. Aitken, 1909
This is an elegant Cased Pair of Edwardian Sterling Silver Napkin Rings. The napkin rings are round with rolled and beaded rims. The bodies are engraved with continuous ivy leaf decoration and have a navette shaped blank cartouche at the front. The domed case is marked for the retailer W.B. Pidduck & Son of St Ann's Place, Manchester.
The napkin rings were made in Birmingham by silversmith William Aitken and date to 1909. William Aitken founded his firm in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter in the late 1880s. He produced a wide range of silverware for both domestic and personal use and had pieces assayed in both Birmingham and Chester. He remained in business into the early 1920s.
Condition is generally good with just a few small dings and one slightly larger crease in the rims plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The outside of the box is a little scuffed but the hinges and clasp are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each napkin ring is 4.7cm / 1.8ins in diameter and 2.3cm / 0.9ins deep. The pair together, unboxed, weighs in at a respectable 22.5g / 0.79oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the engraved bodies, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter k for 1909 and the W.A makers' mark for William Aitken.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
