1918 silver James Wadsworth pocket watch &chain Pocket watch Watches 1910s %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Antique 1918 silver James Wadsworth pocket watch and albert.

The watch has a Swiss stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 49mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the two case backs for London (import mark) 1918 with an importer's mark for George Stockwell.

From 1 June 1907, Stockwells acted as assay agents, facilitating the import into Britain of foreign gold and silver items, which had to be assayed and hallmarked in a UK assay office before being released for retail.

The case has a pin-prick size “ding” to the side, and some unevenness to the hinged case back. The back of the watch has the initials GS.

The glass lens is in good condition.

The dial is signed James Wadsworth, Manchester, the original retailer of the watch. The dial is in lovely condition with original hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.

The watch comes with a silver double albert, also hallmarked for 1918... each chain measures 23cm long including the T-bar and the clasp. Each of the links has the lion passant mark.

Also included is a Victorian double florin, also known as the "Barmaid's Grief" due to its similarity to the slightly larger crown coin which had a value of 25% more than the double florin. As neither coin was marked with its denomination and both used an identical portrait of Queen Victoria on the obverse, it was very easy to get the two coins mixed up.

The watch and chain will be sent in a new presentation box.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the \'Buy Securely\' button on each listing page.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
