17th-Century Dutch School Portrait Of A Lady

17th-Century Dutch School Portrait Of A Lady painting portrait lady %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A fine 17th-century portrait of an older lady wearing a plain white collar with lace edging, black bonnet and white cuffs.

The identity of this formidable lady has been lost over time but her outfit aligns with the style of the mid-17th-century. Her simple black dress with large plain white collar is similar to the outfit worn by the subject of this portrait by Bartholomeus van der Helst (1613-1670).

Perhaps it also reminds us a little of the ‘Lady with an Ostrich-Feather Fan’ in Rembrandt van Rijn’s 1656/8 work. But in contrast to the gentle delicacy and soft lines of the lady with the fan, ours is comprised of strong angles and carries a monumental presence.

In the top right, an inscription reads ‘Aetatis svae 70, 1658’, which translates as ‘at the age of 70, 1658’. Working back from this date gives our subject a birth year of 1588 and to put that into context, that’s the time of the Spanish Armada.

On the reverse, a stamp from the studio of Curt Agthe (1862-1943) dates the painting’s restoration to 1916. It appears that it was relined at this point but the strainer bars look to be original.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Size: 36” x 30” / 91cm x 76cm
Year of creation: c. 1658
Provenance: Berlin, Germany and Ohio, USA
Condition: Overall good. A few areas in the darker pigments where the paint has bituminised and some scattered in-painting following its restoration. Relined. A clean and revarnish could bring out the painting’s vibrancy or you may prefer it as it is. Frame with age-related wear.

Terms and conditions
Please be assured that we inspect every painting, drawing or print to check for issues relating to its condition during its time here with us. When we notice a fault or potential problem, we will note this down on the item's condition report, which can be found within each listing. We take various steps to ensure that your artwork will stand the test of time but we're unable to offer any warranties or guarantees as we're just one custodian in a potentially long line of previous owners.

Our inspections include a check for any signs of woodworm, historic or otherwise, as this is not unusual in antique frames or stretchers. If we discover any small holes, we treat the wood with a solution which states that "its deep penetration ensures effective protection for many years and prevents re-infestation". With this in mind, it's very unlikely that any future issues will occur, especially given that the wood may also have been treated by previous owners. However, as mentioned above, we are unable to provide any warranties or guarantees - just be assured that we care.

Also, many of the paintings include hanging equipment, namely wire or string. Sometimes this is already present when we purchase an item so we check to see if it's been attached correctly. However, we can't test the durability of this equipment as many of the paintings are sold quickly. So please do seek any advice if you're unsure how to hang your paintings correctly, especially if they're heavy, and do check on them from time to time.

If you have any questions at all, please just ask.
